Culture Wars Continued: The War on Halloween
For years Fox news has declared that there’s a “war on Christmas” and that Christians are somehow being victimized by it. Meanwhile Christians have little problem telling you how evil other things are, like Halloween, which doesn’t even give you the day off.
This is why I suspect that one of the most popular costumes this year will be Ultra Christianist and politician Christine O’Donnell “Christian Witch” suits.
Halloween has always been a great skeptical demonstration for children — by dressing them up as witches, goblins, vampires, and other monsters you demonstrate that the supernatural is make-believe, not that scary, and not real. It’s no wonder that fundamentalists would be against showing children that supernatural monsters aren’t scary since they use supernatural fear as one lever to move their congregations.
Some research into the history of the Halloween festivities shows how evil it has been and is. Jack-o’-lanterns, black cats, costumes, trick or treating, etc.. are all part of the popular celebration of Halloween. Most people dismiss the legend and lore as senseless superstition. Even many Christians are willing to ignore the Satanic origins of this annual event. Some try to make it acceptable by creating alternatives which do not include the more questionable traditions. Haunted houses attracting thousands are sometimes sponsored by churches which see no harm or foul on their part. Call it “fun fright” or harmless spooking, the fact is that God isn’t the author of Halloween which encourages fun by fright. The Biblical injunction in Ephesians 4:27, to “neither give place to the devil” forbids experimentation with the occult. God commanded the Israelites to not permit or practice witchcraft “For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord…”
